Why Small Kitchens Will Save You Money

Kitchens are arguably the most often used room in your house. For this reason, a nice expensive kitchen is often what is most desired. But what happens when you cannot afford that? How can you save money and still be comfortable? How can you make cheap kitchens nice?

One of the first things to think about is the space you have. If you are buying a house, the rule tends to be that the larger the kitchen, the more expensive the house. This is because small kitchens are a nuisance. They do not have to be, though.

When it comes to space, there is tons of wasted space above your head. Thankfully, many companies have got the idea of over-your head shelving which hangs well within arm range, but well away from any distance where you could bump your head. Most people put these over their kitchen islands, where they would not be walking anyway.

Many people also have a difficult time resisting the temptation of lots of decorations on the walls. If you put shelves there instead, you can free up almost all of your counter space and clear out your cupboards so you will not have to dig to find things. Shelving in kitchens is an untapped resource.

The first thing you should do is mark out how much of the space in your kitchen is being wasted by something that serves no purpose. You will be amazed at how much better your kitchen looks when things are organized and evenly placed. You will be able to move and cook more efficiently because you will be able to find things.

When it comes to flooring, many people love the look of a stone or wood floor in a kitchen. You can find fake versions of these in any good laminate store for a fraction of the cost. This is also a more durable option. Stone can crack and wood can scar if something heavy is dropped on it. Both of these items can also stain badly, depending on the wood or stone. Laminated tile is extremely easy to clean, very hard to damage, and can be replaced easily.

There are plenty of other things you can do, too, to scrimp a little here and there. When putting in cupboards, provided they have a decent paint job, who can tell the difference between a one hundred dollar unit and a one thousand dollar unit? If you have a cheap kitchen table, just cover it in a nice table cloth when company comes around. When no one is actually cooking, light candles to make it cozier and you will save on your light bill.
