Digital radios take the traditional radio and amplify them with a slew of additional features and increased functionality. There are many great advantages including an LCD screen and the ability to pause, record and rewind live radio. Before you go out and buy one of these digital radio systems, make sure you consider your needs and these important factors first. It can help you determine which digital radio is right for you.
One reason that many people choose to buy a digital radio is the EPG or electronic program guide. This guide makes finding radio stations easy. It is a great way to find new and entertaining radio broadcasts. Your radio will also be able to play all of your favorite local radio stations. You can even input your favorites into your system to make it easy to find them the next time.
Similar to a TIVO or Digital Video Recorder, your EPG will also let you pause live audio. It also has the capability to record live audio. However, not all digital radios come with the added functionality to record. In other words, you will need to assess if you think that this will be necessary for you. If you don’t think that recording live audio will be very important for you, you may want to simply skip that option. On the other hand, if you think that you will be recording a great deal of live audio, you may want to opt for a radio that has a memory card.
Also make sure you consider the sound quality that you require. Some systems do not even have stereo speakers. While this is not a big deal for everyone, for some, good speakers are a priority. Is you are listening to the radio in a large open space and only plan on using one speaker, the sound quality probably won’t be great no matter what you do. Sound quality on a digital radio can be great, but sometimes isn’t any better than a standard radio. It all depends on the broadcast you are listening to and their method of compression.
Of course, if you live in an area where there are no digital broadcasts, this type of radio may not be a good possibility after all. Other people just have problems receiving a signal in their homes for one reason or another. When you initially buy a digital radio, you may want to confirm that you can easily return it. Through that means, if you can’t get a signal, you won’t be stuck with a radio that you can’t use.
